Talking to the older sister of 19-year-old EMT Vanessa Carrillo, the woman critically injured in Tuesday’s head-on collision on I-25 when a wrong-way car collided with the ambulance Carrillo was driving, was encouraging.

She’s awake, talking and she should be just fine. She was airlifted to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque after the crash and friends and family have been by her side since.

She had a torn muscle in her arm, multiple broken bones in both legs and a broken orbital bone in her face. And when talking with family Wednesday morning, “She told us to stop worrying about her,” said Desiree Carrillo, Vanessa’s 21-year-old sister. “That’s how she is.”

Northbound I-25 was still closed around lunchtime Tuesday as police sifted through “several hundred feet” of crash-scene debris according to Santa Fe Police Chief Aric Wheeler.

A woman driving a late-model Nissan Altima was reportedly reaching speeds around 100 mph while traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-25 when she collided head-on with a medical transport truck around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The woman died and the female passenger in her car was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center. the female driver of the medical transport truck was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.
