New Mexico State Police on Monday released the following stats regarding St. Patricks Day weekend DWI arrests statewide:

New Mexico State Police arrested 38 DWI offenders during the Saint Patrick’s Day holiday weekend.

State Police Officers were out in force over the holiday weekend conducting 15 DWI sobriety checkpoint projects though-out the state. Sobriety checkpoints have been an effective law enforcement tool in New Mexico since 1991 with the creation of coordinated efforts, such as Operation DWI.

Checkpoints are conducted in every community across the state, especially during dangerous holiday weekends. At checkpoints, police officers stop and observe drivers for signs of impairment under court-ordered rules that ensure fairness.

Drivers who appear to be impaired by alcohol or drugs are pulled over for further testing. For sober drivers, the interruption is usually minimal.

Not all of the above listed DWI arrests were a direct result of a checkpoint however, based on national and local research; these projects are proven effective in influencing behavior.

The New Mexico State Police will continue its efforts to make New Mexico highways safe by arresting anyone who makes the decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
