Department of Public Safety: You can not get a concealed carry permit through online classes

Answering several inquiries from the public, the Department of Public Safety on Monday sent out the following statement stating the state has not approved any online courses that comply with state guidelines to earn a concealed carry permit in New Mexico.

In short, you can NOT get a concealed carry permit from an online class.

Here is the DPS statement as sent out by New Mexico State Police Lt. Robert McDonald:

Members of the public have recently been contacting the New Mexico Department of Public Safety to inquire about the validity of online Concealed Carry training in New Mexico.

The Departments Special Investigation Division, Concealed Carry Unit has not approved any online classes. Such training does not comply with the guidelines set forth in the New Mexico Concealed Handgun Carry Act or associated rules and regulations.

New Mexico residents should be aware that the completion of an online class does not meet the requirements for the purpose of being licensed to carry a concealed handgun by the State of New Mexico.

Speaking of concealed carry… This gives me a great opportunity to repost the link to the YouTube clip of Gov. Susana Martinez at the shooting range last year when she requalified for her concealed carry permit.

Makes sense. I was surprised to see that Calibers in Albuquerque was offering them. It’s the kind of change that would take an amendment by the legislature. Students really do need to take the education in person so their understanding, comprehension, safe gun handling and marksmanship can be evaluated by a certified instructor. There is no way any part of this can be “vouched” for online. This isn’t like getting internet minister ordination.

The legislation states classroom instruction. It does not include online courses.

Calibers consulted a lawyer but they never consulted DPS which makes me a bit suspicious about their motives.

How many licenses have been issued that will need to be reviewed by DPS now? Calibers sent paperwork to DPS based on the course that was approved by DPS… not an online course.
