There may be a bit of a reassignment/shuffling of duties in the works at The New Mexican so I haven’t been on the daily crime beat for the past couple weeks and won’t be at all this week either. So some of what I’m posting this week won’t be original reporting by me, but rather passing along some information from colleagues.

This from our Local briefs section in Tuesday’s paper:

Santa Fe police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found behind a restaurant at Cerrillos Road near Richards Avenue around 7:45 a.m. Monday.

Santa Fe Police Lt. Louis Carlos said officers found the body after responding to a 911 call reporting a “man down.” When officers and paramedics arrived on scene the man was already dead, according to police, and attempts to revive him were not successful.

Carlos said neither the identify of the man nor the cause of his death had been determined.

“We don’t know if (he) had a medical condition, if he was killed or battered and left there. We are going to allow the autopsy to (dictate) the way we conduct the investigation,” Carlos said.

UPDATE: On Tuesday afternoon (I should have updated this post then), Santa Fe police identified the dead man as 47-year-old Martin Vasquez and say they believe he died of an unspecified medical condition as opposed to any foul play being involved.

    Thank you Geoff,

I passed the scene immediately after the police got there on Monday and it has haunted me all week. Its nice to be able to put a name to the man I saw down. May he find peace.
