A release hearing for former Public Regulation Commissioner Jerome Block Jr. has been scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 22, at 11:30 a.m. before state District Judge Michael Vigil.

Block, who has admitted to a prescription pain killer addiction, was jailed Tuesday after an alleged third violation of the terms of the Adult Drug Court program he was a participant in. He was booted from the program after the undisclosed violation.

At two different court hearings — Sept. 28 and Oct. 26 — Block pleaded guilty to various felony offenses including fraudulent use of a state-issued gas card, embezzling public funds during his 2008 campaign for office, identity theft and violations of campaign-finance laws.

New Mexico Attorney General Gary King, whose office brokered the plea agreement, has said he will now seek the maximum prison term allowed by the deal, which is 4 1/2 years.

Final sentencing in the case has not been scheduled.

Judge Michael Vigil should stop catering to this drug addict and do the right thing and send this youngster to prison. The Drug Treatment Court and whatever treatment conditions that Judge Vigil imposes on him in the past is a clear indication that he does not want any help from any one and will end up killing himself or someone in the end. Send him to prison and let him reevaluate his actions by himself.
