Ricky O. Gonzales on Monday was sentenced to 21-years in state prison for the February stabbing of New Mexico State Police Officer Steven Carroll.
Nine of the years are for the actual crimes he was convicted of last month by a jury and 12 of the years were added as habitual offender years for his being a prior convicted felon.
Gonzales, 39, has said he never tried to kill Carroll and the jury last month agreed, acquitting him of attempted murder charges.
For all the details on what happened and was said at the sentencing, including what happened on the night of the stabbing, see the story posted online Monday and published in print in Tuesday morning’s New Mexican.
