From a story I wrote Monday afternoon for Tuesday’s New Mexican (full version here):
A jail guard at the Rio Arriba County Detention Facility in Tierra Amarilla found himself behind bars Sunday morning after police say he left three children alone in a hotel room with alcohol while he was drinking at a bar with friends.
Isaac J. Maestas, 30, of Tierra Amarilla was arrested early Sunday at the Okhay Casino Resort north of Española and charged with three counts of child abuse or endangerment of his 9-, 4- and 2-year-old children.
None of the children was harmed. They were released early Sunday morning to the custody of their mother, who was working at the time as a guard at the Santa Fe County jail.

According to Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jake Arnold, shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, police dispatchers received a call from a 9-year-old boy who said his father had left him and his siblings alone in a hotel room, but the boy didn’t know which hotel.

When officers arrived, according to a probable-cause statement for Maestas’ arrest, written by Deputy Anthony Armijo, they saw several beer bottles lying around the hotel room and several open bottles of alcohol that had still had alcohol in them.
“Video from the hotel showed he left the kids alone for about an hour, and it was pretty apparent there had been a party of some sort there in the hotel room before he and some friends took the party down to the bar, where we located him,” Arnold said.
The probable-cause statement indicates Maestas told police he “left the 9-year-old in charge and knew that it was wrong to do, but wasn’t thinking clearly.”
