I’m reposting the first several graphs of my story from Sunday’s New Mexican here on Victoriano Moises “Mo” Byrne Gonzales, a 21-year-old who was expecting his first child this Thursday with his fiancée but was killed Friday trying to help a woman he saw getting beat up.

Zayden will never meet his father.

But he can live his life knowing his dad died trying to do the right thing.

Less than a week before his fiancée’s Thursday due date to give birth to Zayden, the couple’s first child, 21-year-old Victoriano “Mo” Byrne Gonzales was killed around 7:45 p.m. Friday in a Pojoaque mobile home park trying to help a woman he saw in trouble.

That’s just what “Mo” did, said his sister and mother. He always helped people.

“He was fixing his car outside my house, and he saw a man beating up [that man’s] girlfriend, so he ran after the guy,” said Amelia Byrne Gonzales, Victoriano’s older sister.

“He didn’t even know the girl, but he chased the guy around the corner, and right after [that] he came running back toward my house bleeding from the neck and yelling, ‘Run, he’s got a knife, he’s got a knife.’ … I saw him laying there, but I didn’t want to believe it. I didn’t want to believe it.”

Santa Fe County sheriff’s investigators say Victoriano Byrne Gonzales, an aspiring artist and preschool teacher in Santa Fe, died at the scene from a stab wound to the throat. His friend, Santiago Cordova, was stabbed in the back and was listed in stable condition Saturday at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, according to Santa Fe County Sheriff Robert Garcia.

The man whom police suspect of stabbing them, Adrian L. Gonzales, a 30-year-old Dixon man who is not related to Byrne Gonzales, was arrested in the Albuquerque area at 3 a.m. Saturday on southbound Interstate 25. Gonzales was booked into the Santa Fe County jail at 6 a.m. Saturday on an open count of murder and one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

I will post info on funeral an memorial arrangements when I learn of them (there is a 2 p.m. Sunday memorial arranged by some of his friends at the Cross of the Martyrs).
