A jury on Tuesday found Ricky O. Gonzales, 39, not guilty of attempted murder of New Mexico State Police Officer Steven Carroll when Gonzales stabbed the officer during a traffic stop off Airport Road on Feb. 16.
The jury did find him guilty of aggravated battery on a peace officer, two counts of disarming a police officer and one count of escape from custody.
Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m. in front of state District Judge Michael Vigil.
Colleague Tom Sharpe covered the trial for The New Mexican. Here are two of his stories from last week’s trial and then a link to my original story from February:
- Nov. 7 – Trial begins against man charged with stabbing cop
- Nov. 9 – Deliberations begin in cop stabbing case
- Feb. 17 – Officer stabbed, suspect shot in overnight scuffle
