Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies on Saturday arrested two women they say went out drinking while leaving seven children at home without heat or supervision.

Maria Medina, 37, 1246 Centa del Via, and Karina Medina, 27, 45 Los Pinos Road, were each arrested sometime after 1 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Los Pinos Road and each charged with seven counts of child abuse or abandonment. Karina Medina was also charged with driving while intoxicated. Both were being held without bond late Saturday, according to the jail website.

According to a police report, deputies were sent to Karina Medina’s home at 1 a.m. Saturday when a small child was seen by neighbors walking around the home. When police arrived, nobody would answer the door to the home, according to the report, but police could see through a window “very small children inside” without supervision.

Police say seven children ranging from 8 months to 13 years old were in the home. “There was not heat in the house and it was just above freezing,” the report states. The two Medina woman returned home in a vehicle Karina Medina was driving drunk, police say, and both were arrested while the children were released to other family members. The case was referred to the Children, Youth and Families Department.

The women told police they had left the home at 6 p.m. to attend a party.

Maybe it was the “other family members” that were supposed to be at home with the kids all along. It must really sting to have made it home driving drunk (what’d she blow?) and the cops are in your driveway.
