With Santa Fe Public Schools starting the school year on Monday, police say they will step up speed enforcement in school zones.

One of the city’s two speed SUVs will be parked in school zones twice during the school day — from 7:25-8:15 a.m. and again from 2:10-2:55 p.m.

In addition to the photo enforcement SUVs parked in school zones, Santa Fe Police Capt. Aric Wheeler said the police department’s patrol division “will step up patrolling, especially in the first two weeks of school, in all school zones during the peak pick-up and drop-off hours.”

The aim of the stepped-up patrols and photo enforcement SUVs, according to Wheeler, isn’t to catch speeders but rather remind motorists to change their driving habits in those areas.
