A 20-year-old Las Cruces man was charged Monday with extreme animal cruelty after he allegedly kicked and slammed against a metal bed frame a 5-month old puppy during an argument with a roommate last week.
Cody Michael Carmack, 20, was in jail Monday afternoon being held in lieu of a $5,000 cash bond.
The Sun-News reports that several days after the argument, the puppy, whose name is ‘Thor’ and who now lives with a new owner, was still not using his injured leg when walking so the owner took the dog to the vet.
From the Sun-News article:
On Friday, the new owner took the puppy to a veterinarian’s office where he learned that the dog was suffering from a broken tibia and fibula, and that its leg would have to be amputated in order to save the puppy’s life.
The puppy underwent surgery on Friday and was expected to be released back to its new owner sometime this week.
And backing it up some to what police say happened during the fight:
According to Las Cruces Police, Carmack got into an argument July 23 with a 21-year-old woman who was his roommate and the owner of the dog. The woman told police that Carmack got so angry that he kicked the 5-month-old puppy and then picked it up and slammed the dog against a metal bed frame.
Police said the puppy, a wirehair Terrier named Thor, yelped for about an hour.
