Two buildings in a central Santa Fe apartment complex were evacuated about 2:15 p.m. Thursday while police searched a vacant home in the Las Palomas Apartments, 2001 Hopewell St., for possible explosive devices.
A maintenance worker cleaning out a recently vacated apartment found what appeared to be a rocket-propelled grenade behind a door in the home, Santa Fe Police Capt. Aric Wheeler said.
“It didn’t appear it was live, but we had to clear out two buildings as a precaution, then took the RPG into custody,” Wheeler said.
The department’s bomb squad then took the device to a firing range off Airport Road and detonated the item, Wheeler said.
The investigation, including information on the unnamed former tenants of the apartment, will likely by forwarded to federal investigators, the captain said.
