On Tuesday, detectives continued interviewing students who rode Santa Fe Public Schools’ Bus No. 2 and now say they have confirmed inappropriate contact between former bus driver Martin Gonzales and at least nine children.
Lt. Louis Carlos said Santa Fe police have not yet interviewed all the students who road the bus to Amy Biehl Community School at Rancho Viejo and Capshaw Middle School. Investigators believe more victims might come forward.
Gonzales, 54, was arrested Thursday and charged with one count of criminal sexual contact with a minor after police say he confessed to touching the vaginal area of an 8-year-old girl who was on his bus. That confession came after a 13-year-old girl used her cellphone to record Gonzales squeezing her covered thighs and the thighs of her friend. That incident led to two battery charges against him.
On Monday, police said the victim count was up to six. Three more victims were identified Tuesday for a total of nine. Carlos said the evidence warrants criminal charges against Gonzales for all six victims identified since last week’s charges were filed.
The bus driver, who was fired from his job with Santa Fe Public Schools, was released from custody at 2:05 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Santa Fe County jail website. He was being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
