Friends and supporters of Leland Valdez, the 3-year-old boy who police say was beaten to death in January by his mother and her live-in boyfriend, will be passing out blue balloons to people making the Good Friday pilgrimage to Santuario de Chimayó in an effort to raise awareness about child abuse.

The table will be set up Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. outside the Nambé church on N.M. 502 where Leland was buried in February.

Volunteers are asking walkers to bring a toy to donate. For more information, email speakupandspeakoutnm@yahoo.com.
