Governor Susana Martinez announced Sunday that she has ordered flags to be flown at half staff from April 4-11 in honor of children who have died as a result of child abuse.

“Leland Valdez and Breandra Pena were two beautiful children whose lives ended tragically due to senseless child abuse. Unfortunately, there are many more children across New Mexico who have been victims of violence and neglect. I have ordered flags to be flown at half staff in honor of all of these victims as we work to end.” — Gov. Susana Martinez
And here is the text of the Governor’s executive order:
WHEREAS, Leland Valdez and Breandra Pena were beautiful innocent children whose futures were taken by those who should have loved them the most;
WHEREAS, the public can now report suspicion of child abuse and neglect by calling 1-855-333-SAFE (7233), or #SAFE (#7233) from our cell phones;
WHEREAS, the Children, Youth & Families Department’s new and easy to remember toll-free number makes it easier for the public to partner with the Department to protect
WHEREAS, all New Mexicans deserve to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment free from fear, abuse, and neglect;
WHEREAS, we are committed to using every resource available to the state of New Mexico to prevent senseless and tragic deaths like those of Leland and Breandra;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Susana Martinez, Governor of the State of New Mexico, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the Laws of the State of New Mexico, do hereby order that all flags be flown at half-staff from Monday, April 4, 2011, until sundown on Monday, April 11, 2011, in honor and mourning of Leland Valdez, Breandra Pena, and all New Mexico children who have been innocent victims of child abuse or neglect. The thoughts and prayers of the people of New Mexico are with each and every one of New Mexico’s precious children.
