Orlando Trujillo has been charged with murder (KOB-TV screen grab)

Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office investigators didn’t have to put forth much effort in finding a homicide suspect on Monday.

In fact, police say Orlando Trujillo called them up, told them who, where and when he had just shot and killed a man then asked that they come arrest him at Dandy Burger in Española (where else?).

Trujillo, 32, reportedly told police he shot Jeffrey Garcia, a friend of his, after confronting the man at his San Pedro home near Española about allegedly hitting one of Trujillo’s children. According to the probable-cause statement, “Trujillo said that Garcia told him, ‘Yeah, I hit your kids. What are you going to do about it?’ ”

So Trujillo says he then went to his car, grabbed a gun, and shot Garcia five times.
Police as of late Monday had not yet made contact with Trujillo’s ex-girlfriend, and the mother of the children the two have together. Police suspect she and Garcia have been involved in a relationship recently.

Trujillo was incarcerated Monday night in the Rio Arriba County jail in Tierra Amarilla without bond on an open count of murder. Police did not know Garcia’s age late Monday.

Since we did not have a photographer there in Española during the perp walk, I stole a screen shot from our media-partners at KOB-TV and here is a link to a video they had Monday night, which includes an interview with one of Garcia’s neighbors:

  1. Mark says:

Contest: What will the Rio Grande Sun call title this in their police notes… they always come with the knee slappers.

  2. vanessa chacon says:

Orlando Trujillo is a liar and a drug addict and a coward. No one ever touched his kids. The victim and his wife took in Orlando”s kids and ex-wife in when no one else would because no one wanted to deal with Orlando. Orlando had a habit of accusing people of hurting his kids.

  3. Nicole says:

My prayers are with the Garcia family. May God be with you.
