A Santa Fe County grand jury has indicted Ricky O. Gonzales, 39, with charges stemming from a Feb. 16 arrest in which he was charged with stabbing a New Mexico State Police officer.
Gonzales, who police say was shot in the shoulder during an altercation with Officer Steven Carroll, 25, after a traffic stop, is being held in lieu of $1 million cash bond.
The grand jury indicted Gonzales on the following charges: first-degree attempted murder, aggravated battery upon a peace officer, two counts of disarming a police officer and escape from a police officer.
Carroll, who was stabbed in the lower abdomen, remains on medical leave but is recovering from the wound, according to Lt. Eric Garcia, who said his department received “hundreds of e-mails and hundreds of phone calls of support for Officer Carroll.”
Gonzales is scheduled to be arraigned before state District Judge Stephen Pfeffer on March 21.
