New Mexico State Police on Friday released the identity of one of the two bodies found Monday morning inside a burned car north of Española.
Joey Maestas, 25, of Hernandez was one of the two people who police say was killed before someone set fire to a 2000 Honda Accord at a roadside rest area on U.S. 285 between Española and Ojo Caliente, Lt. Eric Garcia said.
Police have classified the case as a double homicide and say both people were dead before the vehicle was ignited.
The second person, a female, found in the car around 4 a.m. Monday, has not yet been identified.
State police executed a search warrant at a man’s home in the Española area earlier this week but that warrant has been sealed and no charges have been filed in the case.
