From a statement just released by New Mexico State Police on Tuesday’s fatal car crash near Glorieta that occurred around 6:30 p.m.:
Raquel Garcia, 3, of Las Vegas, New Mexico died yesterday evening after two vehicles collided.
State Police officers from the Pecos and Santa Fe offices responded to a two-vehicle collision just after 6:30 p.m. on Intersate-25 near milepost 299 (between Pecos and Santa Fe). Through the course of the officers’ investigation, they learned that Marsela Garcia, 20, also of Las Vegas, was traveling northbound on I-25 in a 2002 Chevy with her daughter Raquel.
For a reason that is still under investigation, Marsela left her lane and traveled into the path of another northbound vehicle (Kia). The 2008 Kia driven by Tim Lopez, 48, of Pecos New Mexico was struck by Marsela’s vehicle and spun out of control coming to a rest in the median. Marsela’s vehicle also spun out of control and subsequently rolled several times. During the rolling momentum Raquel Garcia was ejected.
Raquel Garcia was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator, the drivers were medically assessed and released.
Failure to properly secure the child restraint was a contributing factor in the crash. Alcohol was not listed as a contributing factor in the crash.
