Here is the New Mexico State Police press release about the fatal car crash that closed Interstate 25 this evening in Santa Fe:

State Police and Santa Fe Police Department are investigating a fatal two vehicle crash this evening.

State Police were called to the scene of a pick-up versus commercial motor vehicle crash just before 5 p.m. today on the south bound lanes of Interstate 25, near mile post 282 (St. Francis). Through the course of the investigation the officers learned that the 2001 Ford pickup driven by an unidentified male driver was traveling south on I-25 when he encountered slow moving traffic. The pick-up impacted with the rear end of a CMV box trailer exposing the combustible contents, the pick-up within seconds was engulfed in flames. The driver of the 2006 Peterbuilt, 55-year-old Louis N. Anderson of Dallas, Texas was not injured, however was medically accessed and released.

It is unclear as of this point if the driver of the pick-up was killed upon impact or because of the fire; due to the amount of damage sustained to the driver of the pick-up identity and cause of death is pending confirmation. OMI autopsy will have to clarify if alcohol was involved, Santa Fe Police Department and members of the State Police accident reconstruction team were on scene working to piece together the crash.

I wasn’t able to work this story for the paper, but another reporter is on it and check Thursday’s New Mexican for more information.
