I JUST FINISHED READING A BRIEF ABOUT ACCIDENT FATALITY JORGE ROMERO
IN THE ZIA ROAD CRASH LAST WEEK AND THE PAPER REPORTS THAT THE VICTIM
WAS 23 YEARS OLD. THE FAMILY SAYS 21 YEARS OLD. I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW
THESE STORIES GET PRINTED WITHOUT THE FACTS BEING INVESTIGATED.
THE SAME THING HAPPENED A COUPLE WEEKS AGO WHEN THE NEW MEXICAN
REPORTED THAT THE “NINJA” ROBBER WAS CAUGHT IN LOS ALAMOS AND THEN
IN THE PAPER IT SAID HE HADN’T BEEN FOUND YET WITH NO MENTION TO THE
PREVIOUS WRITE UP THAT HE WAS. WHATS UP WITH THAT?

As for the “ninja” bandit, you’ll have to point out to me the article after his capture in Los Alamos where we reported he hadn’t been found yet. I don’t think that ever happened and I’ve been a part of this coverage of the story since Day 1 (although Anne Constable bylined the capture story as that was on a Saturday when I was home, but still assisted by phone).

We reported it that way for that very reason. If police are saying that his ID indicates he’s 23, and his family is telling us he’s 21, that’s covering the bases there. Either police/the state MVD office is wrong, or his family is wrong, but there isn’t a good way for us to tell either they’re wrong in this case so that is exactly why we reported both.

Normally a check with MVD can verify age, but what if MVD has it wrong as the family suggests here?

In the same breath, it should be pointed out that SFPD also released a statement to the media here and in Albuquerque that there was a couple in their mid 40s in the vehicle Romero collided with. That turned out to be a 47-year-old father and his 15-year-old daughter. We reported what was given to us when police released the information so people would know what is going on, but the second we verified police released erroneous information, we updates the story.

It happens, but we strive to get the correct info out to the public in matters like this as soon as possible.
