The animal rights group Animal Protection of New Mexico is offering up a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever shot and killed Maria, the Nigerian dwarf goat who was killed in a drive-by shooting last week in the front yard of her Santa Fe home.

Witnesses saw a bluish-green mini van (most likely a late 1990’s model Plymouth or Chrysler). The driver/shooter looked to be between 35- to 45-years-old. Police found .25 caliber bullet casings were found in the yard by Santa Fe police.

Spending time with the goat’s owners and a few neighbors in the community, I have to tell you it was pretty special just how much the community really did seem to love these goats. It was sort of sad listening to one mother tell me about her 9-year-old son who would walk the family dog down the street every morning before school to see Maria and the two other goats who live there — Sonny, Maria’s son, and Bella. The boy is now afraid to take the dog for a walk in the neighborhood.

Santa Fe Police Chief Aric Wheeler told me Tuesday afternoon after the city Public Safety Committee meeting at City Hall that there are still no leads in the case.

Here’s hoping a little $1,000 incentive tempts someone into providing police with some information.
