Scott Owens leaves the District Court House after his aquital on Tuesday. (Luis Sanchez Saturno/The New Mexican)

Dan Koffman, who has sold ads at the Santa Fe Reporter, declined to talk with me after Tuesday’s verdict in the Scott Owens case. In the past, he has voiced his displeasure with The New Mexican‘s coverage of the tragic crash that killed four teens and severely injured his then 16-year-old daughter, Avree Koffman, who was the lone survivor in the car with the other teens.

I was actually told on Tuesday by both supporters of the teen crash victims and of a supporter of Scott Owens that my coverage was biased so I managed to upset both side apparently.

When Tuesday’s not guilty verdict was read, Dan Koffman, like dozens of supporters of the teen crash victims, were visibly upset.

After he left the courtroom, he told his coworker, Wren Abbott of the Reporter, the following:

“A murderer is loose in our fucking town. I hope he has money for plastic surgery.” — Dan Koffman on Scott Owens

Wren’s blog post has a lot of raw emotion from friends and family of the victims family. You should take a look at her post here:

And here are some other links to coverage around Santa Fe and Albuquerque of the verdict:

So, I had a case when the current DDA was a defense attorney? He got a THUG off that almost killed someone @ will most likely hurt someone else in Santa Fe. Now the current DDA can’t beat his old buddies as they keep getting smarter about the system. So, we have to take a closer look at the District Attorney.

I know! Its his own daughter who is loose on this town. These parents need to accept responsibly for not having boundaries with their children. Allowing the kids to break the provisional license law, this is exactly what happens….. it has happened to many times before and if the driver license age restrictions are not raised it will continue to happen. Leave Scott Owens alone he is innocent, but the parents of the children are solely responsible for not knowing where their children were or what they were doing that night…. I feel it is very discouraging that the father of the only survivor has so much anger towards an innocent man and is not accepting his own responsibly for this tragedy.

We all know the families are upset, completely understood! but hurting Scott Owens will not bring back the teens!! I think everyone is entitled to their opinions, but you should still act like adults. Scott Owens has to live with this for the rest of his life also.. I’m sure he didn’t want this to happen… They all were at fault this night!!especially the parents of the teens.. One said that if Scott Owens would have just stayed home or stayed somewhere to sober up, this wouldnt of happened..but if the parents would have kept their children at home that night and obided by a curfew and their provisional rules, this wouldn’t have happened either!! Lets all be adults.. He was found not guilty because of all the eveidence shown…

  4. Samantha says:

Valid point zeekee!!! He’s an innocent man.. These children need to tell the truth on what really happened… At least an innocent man will not be sent to prison…

Regardless of their at the time of accident license sistuation, He shouldnt of been drinking! If he were not OVER 2x the legal limit he could of prevented the accident. If he were sober he could of swerved out of the way faster, or honked anything. But the fact that he was Under the influence, or imparred he didnt. Also its not the parents fualt either, the “kids” could of sneak out of the house, or the parents for all they knew their kids WERE at home in bed. Think of it, did you all used to sneak out go to parties etc? YES did your parents know? Probably not! Owens served his time for DWI, NOW its time to serve for Vehicular Homicide. He will hold four teens lives for ever, he will rott forever with this on his shoulders, and i hope he never forgives himself!! There is a lot of WHAT ifs but the case is closed now, and he is a free man. Now i wonder if State of NM will do that for more drunk drivers & let them free…?

    • Samantha says:

All evidence proved it happened in his lane… Did you not follow up on the whole story, trial and evidence!!?!? He was at the wrong place at the wrong time, regardless if he was drinking (yes he shouldn’t have been).. All evidence proved he was not at fault.. Witnesses seen the teens driving erratically.. There stories did not add up and the 911 call says it all

    • GRAMMY says:

NOT EVEN ANYONE SOBER COULD HAVE PERVENTED THIS ACCIDENT. THE TEEN’S WERE SOBER WHY COULD THEY HAVE SWERVED OUT OF THE WAY.
IN THE TRAIL THEY SAID THE ACCIDENT TOOK ABOUT TWO TENTHS OF A SECOND OR SO TO HAPPEN. NO ONE COULD OF PERVENTED THIS HORRIBLE ACCIDENT EXCEPT FOR THOSE TEEN’S BEING HOME WHERE THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE!!!!!!!!!

  6. Samantha says:

Also if the kids were at home, it would have prevented it, like u said,”alot of “if’s”!

  7. Addis says:

well he was wrong for driving while intoxicated and i do not condone that behavior…but why the heck are these kids out so late? who’s really to blame? the drunk driver, the parents or the kids? the parents are angry over the verdict but why should they care? they let their kids stay out all hours of the night. great parenting skills there people.

  8. How Shameful! Scott jsut got another DWI..Not enough blood on his hands? TO all the people that had the nerve to talk ill of the the dead KIDS and their parents. Wake up. This guy jsut got another DUI…He will hurt more people. He should be in jail for murder…and had a DUI charge! People need to wake up! Next time…the guy with 10 DUI’s will hit you or your family! Take it seriously, learn from it, make changes in the town and demand more from the justice system or you will be hit next !
